Nanny vs babysitter

Understanding In-Home CareFor families & caregivers

The words are often used interchangeably, but the roles are genuinely different. Knowing which one your family needs, or which one describes your work, makes for a better match and a fairer rate.

A nanny is an educator

A nanny is an educator who invests in your child's development, planning activities, supporting learning through everyday experiences, and building a genuine ongoing relationship with your family. Many bring formal early childhood qualifications and apply them at home, one-on-one. That depth of care is what sets the role apart from occasional babysitting.

A babysitter provides trusted care

A babysitter is a supervisor and carer, there to keep your children safe, happy, and looked after, usually on a casual or occasional basis, like date nights, events, or a hand when you need one. Wonderful, valuable work, just with a different focus from the developmental, ongoing role of a nanny.

The short version

Choose a nanny when you want regular, developmental care and a lasting relationship. Choose a babysitter when you want trusted, flexible supervision as you need it. Both are career caregivers worthy of professional respect and fair pay.
